Forte dei Marmi

Forte dei Marmi is seaside town in Tuscany coast with many cafes and bars

Forte dei Marmi was founded in 1914. Its history is relatively recent and its origins are related to the artistic work of Michelangelo Buonarroti. By order of the Pope Leone XIII, Michelangelo gave up the marble of Carrara and began to use that of Seravezza. To facilitate transportation, Michelangelo had built a road from Seravezza ending right on the dock. From there, in fact, the marble was shipped and transported by boat.

Famous for its marbles, Forte dei Marmi became an important center of maritime trade. In the 700 the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo had built a fort to protect the city. The fort became the gathering place around which grew Forte dei Marmi, and had the dual function as a military and customs.

Today, the upscale, trendy, seaside town is the summer residence of many famous people. By day, you can stroll along the promenade and out on to the famous point or you can choose to visit the many quaint shops that the line the narrow streets  many of which are designer names. You can also choose to sit outside the many cafes and bars, enjoying a glass of wine or a cup of gelato and absorbing the simple joys of people watching.
